Modern Development:
Ownership of Callawassie Island passed to prominent Lowcountry land owners, the Kirk family, until confiscated by the Union Army in 1867. Sugar cane and the famous Sea Island Cotton were grown on the Island plantation in the 1800s. Later, Callawassie Island was farmed for timber and, until the late 1970s, was used as a hunting preserve.

Development of Callawassie Island as a private residential community and country club began in 1981. In 1985, the Island was purchased by Jim Chaffin, Jim Light, and Dr. Peter LaMotte, who are dedicated to completing its development in a sensitive and quality-conscious manner.
